From A(avatars) to Z(ero latency)

This talk introduces recent work of Würzburg’s HCI group at the Kolloquium Kognitive Neurowissenschaften of the Institute for Neuroscience and Medicine of the research center Jülich. We will begin with a discussion of Avatar Technology and how it is useful as an immersive human-computer interface enabling studies of Interpersonal Synchronization (IPS) and the Illusion of Virtual Body Ownership (IVBO). This is followed by a short reflection on the utilization of interactive and immersive systems for therapy and training. As applications of Real-Time Interactive Systems (RIS), such interfaces critically depend on the available simulator technology to provide reusable and timeliness-aware systems controlling latency and jitter, pressing problems for many VR and AR systems. We will see how API-usability is strengthening the software quality of RIS in general and of multimodal VR systems specifically, and what we can expect from today’s operating systems and programming languages in terms of required timeliness given concurrency conditions. Finally, we have a look into computer games, their serious application, and today’s rise and hype of VR games.
